My journey with Gift of Life began when I attended a bone marrow donor recruitment drive at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. Two months later, my 18 year old self was donating stem cells to my recipient, Marty Feldman, a man who would change my life forever.
Marty and I exchanged anonymous letters for an entire year and developed a very special friendship. I was blessed to meet him and his family one year after my donation. This is when I began to realize the true impact of my gift. Although Marty passed away in July of 2006, he cherished his 18 extra months of life and was especially overjoyed to walk his youngest daughter down the aisle and experience the birth of his first grandson.
Recently, I was invited to speak at the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue in Washington, DC. I have not attended services regularly since college and welcomed the opportunity to attend a Shabbat with other young professionals. I explained how I have changed and grown due to my experiences with Gift of Life. My relationship with Marty taught me what is really important in life and that each moment deserves to be lived to its fullest potential. I also learned that reaching your goals means taking risks and relying on the support of others.
My continued work with Gift of Life constantly reminds me that one person can truly make a difference in the lives of individuals, families and whole communities. I hope to continue this passion for making a difference into my future while encouraging others to become involved in whatever sparks their own passion. I also plan to continue encouraging others to give themselves the gift of opportunity and join Gift of Life in their mission of providing a match—anywhere, anytime, for anyone.
